It all begun with campers from near and far signing up early monday morning. Registeration for the first day ended at 10am after which all campers suited up for the Dynasty player skills diagnosis session as each player was daignosed of their skills deficiencies and placed in their right skill level to be treated through out four days of fundamental technical and tactical skills training. Treatment for players's deficiencies started 15minutes after as all players of different skill levels where taken through almost 45minutes of footwork training. Footwork is one major deficiencies of many Ghanaian players both young and old and coaches stressed on it's importance through out the camp. Many of the players who turned up for the camp had a fair level of dribbling, bouncing, shooting, passing but many of them lacked the right technique. From day one through to day four players were taken through progressive skills development and each days skills training sessions was transfered to the next days training sessions.
Basketball Intelligence is knowing how and when to use a skill, it can be shooting, layup, passing, pivoting etc. Developing the Basketball Intelligence of players is one of the most essential areas of development in every players game as without it all the many technical skills acquired will be of no asset to players but rather a liability. Players Basketball Intelligence level at the beginning of camp was below average and all the coaching stuff at the summer basketball camp hospital were keen on increasing the basketball intelligence of all players. This was done during the tactical skills session each day through out the four days of players defiencies treatment. Day one of developing the basketball intelligence of players at camp 2010 begun with court spacing which Coach Brian McCormick USA founder of 180shooter quotes St. Louis University Head Coach Rick Majerus in his book Developing Basketball Intelligence as saying “Offense is spacing, and spacing is offense.” Players were taken through the basics of court spacing and court balance when moving. The triangle offense movement came in handy as players gradually understood the concept of court balance as they went through small sided 3on3 simulated game drills.
After four days of skills training all 44 campers both girls and boys showed signs of great improvement in their basketball skills and intelligence as they played in the first camp 3on3 tournament on the fifth day. The skill level competitions where in their respective categories Novice, Intermediate & Amateur. The tournament was exciting to watch as each offensive and defensive move got fellow players both on and off the court and parents clapping and shouting cheers and ooh's.
At the end of the sixth day of camp all 44 players had smiles on their faces a great sign that their skills deficiencies had been treated and they had been given the needed prescription skills tips to continue to treat themselves at home. This was the second year of Dynasty Summer Basketball Camp and we can boldly say that Dynasty is gradually building a solid and standard brand of basketball development in Ghana. We hope all 44 campers will continue to build upon what they have learnt and practised through out the camp. The Summer Basketball Camp Hospital resumes work in 2011 as we look forward to more camps. Do you think Ghana Basketball has a future?
I believe Ghana Basketball has a future if only we start to rebuild the foundation of our youth basketball. the future of Ghana basketball is bright and near, for the talents that dynasty is discovering and the enthusiasm shown by these talents its just overwhelming and when structured and well organised leagues and competitions are organised i believe the foundation will be built strong and then the future will be visible to all to play and support Ghana Basketball.
